Times Square is famous as a forum for extravagant (and, perhaps, obnoxious) public advertising. It's dominated by tickers and billboards and video screens. But if one young Dutch designer has his way, all that advertising space will be turned over to art, if only for a day.
Justus Bruns is the mastermind behind the Times Square to Art Squarecampaign. His goal is to transform Times Square from an advertising maelstrom into a sort of public museum, where the billboard space is given over to a curated selection of artwork submitted especially for the event. Along with simply promoting public art, Bruns hopes the campaign will show that, in the era of social media, all you need is a network of like-minded dreamers (and donors) to bring an inspiring idea to fruition.
